Miss New York Nia Franklin has been named the 2019 Miss America in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Franklin, 24, wowed judges when she performed an opera song during the talent portion of the competition. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Franklin said that she wanted to promote diversity, especially within the arts.
"I just want to thank God for this, it took a lot of perseverance to get here," she said shortly after winning, also thanking her family and especially her father, who is a survivor of cancer.
She was chosen Sunday night among 51 contestants in the first Miss America pageant to be held without a swimsuit competition in its 98-year history.
The contestants were asked an onstage interview question by other contestants.
The judges narrowed the field of 51 candidates during the pageant Sunday night from Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
It is the first Miss America competition in which there is no swimsuit competition, a change that has created a good deal of controversy and criticism of current Miss America leadership.
