Facebook give up on internet drones project

Facebook's quest for solar-powered internet drones has been grounded forever. It was supposed to be the future of digital communication that will help and connect the “next five billion people” to the Internet. The tech company has now shut down in building the high-altitude solar-powered drones which were to provide a backbone for internet connection in areas lacking wired infrastructure.

The decision means Facebook is shutting down a facility in Bridgwater, Somerset, that had been helping to build the technology. Sixteen people have lost their jobs as a result of the closure.
'We've decided not to design or build our own aircraft any longer, and to close our facility in Bridgwater,' it said in a blog post.
'Going forward, we'll continue to work with partners like Airbus on HAPS connectivity generally, and on the other technologies needed to make this system work, like flight control computers and high-density batteries.'
The Project was once a big part of Facebook's plans to provide internet connectivity to people around the world.
