Nigerian man sentenced to 5 years in US federal prison for participating in business email compromise scams

A 29-year-old Nigerian man whose email scams aimed to defraud businesspeople from Singapore to Switzerland out of millions of dollars was sentenced to five years in a US federal prison.

“Onyekachi Emmanuel Opara attempted to dupe thousands of victims into transferring money to him and his co-defendant in a phony email scheme,” said Geoffrey Berman.
Opara, 29, and a partner were arrested in South Africa in December 2016 and extradited to the US from Johannesburg in January of this year.
According to the New York FBI’s Complex Frauds and Cybercrimes Unit, he allegedly cooked up business email scams that targeted thousands of companies worldwide.

In these scams, Opara and fellow conspirators pretended to be supervisors at the target companies or third-party vendors and emailed company employees requesting payments or information.

Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is putting $2bn (£1.5bn) into a charitable fund he has established to help the homeless and set up a new network of schools.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Inc’s founder, and the world’s richest person, on Thursday, said he will commit $2 billion to help homeless families and starting pre-schools for low-income communities.

The world's richest man announced the move in a tweet, saying the charity would be called the Day One Fund.
Mr. Bezos - reportedly worth more than $164bn hanks to his stake in Amazon. 
The fund will be split between Day 1 Families Fund and Day 1 Academies Fund.
Within this, the “Day 1 Families Fund” will support existing non-profits that offer shelter and food to young homeless families.

China confirms US invitation for trade talks

China has received an invitation from the United States to hold trade negotiations, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.
According to sina.com, the confirmation was made by the ministry’s spokesman Gao Feng at a press conference in Beijing, saying China welcomes the attitude and the two countries are in discussion about the details.
“Recently, the negotiation teams of the two sides have maintained contact in various forms and had exchanges on each other’s concerns,” Gao said, stressing that China believes an escalation of the trade conflict goes against everyone’s interests.

President Trump disputes Puerto Rico hurricane death toll


US President Donald Trump is disputing that nearly 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico after the island was hit by two hurricanes last year.

According to BBC news "3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico," Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter, without offering evidence for the claim.
He added that Democrats had inflated the official death toll to "make me look as bad as possible".
The official figure was released last month after an independent study.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump wrote in a pair of tweets that Democrats were attacking him "when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico".

An American tourist commits suicide in Entebbe Zoo Uganda

An American tourist has committed suicide at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Center (UWEC) in Entebbe.
The body of Larkin Crow, 21, a resident of Texas was found hanging from a belt around his neck on Thursday morning outside the dormitories near the restrooms. 
Isaac Mujaasi, the marketing, and public relations officer UWEC say that Larkin who had spent three days at the center had booked to stay at the center for 18 days.
The spokesperson said the police have launched investigations into the incident in the east African country.  “We are not just looking at this as a suicide case. “We have launched investigations to find out exactly how and what happened before the incident,” said Onyango.  
He said the body of the deceased tourist has been taken to Mulago City Mortuary in Kampala for postmortem.

800,000 People Commit Suicide Yearly - WHO

The World Health Organization says no less than 800,000 individuals commit suicide yearly, the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 and 29, in 2016.
WHO made this known on Monday in an announcement to remember the World Suicide Prevention Day.
The global health agency said the common methods of suicide were hanging and firearms occurring in all countries and regions, whether rich or poor.
According to WHO, "Close to 800, 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Many more attempt suicide. Suicide occurs throughout the lifespan and is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally.

Stranger accidentally donate more than $15,000 to a GoFundMe page instead of donating $15

A retired 72-year-old clicked on a GoFundMe page for a woman who lives more than 1,500 miles away from him, considered his limited budget and donated $15 instead, he somehow donated $15,787.
“My first thought was, ‘This didn’t happen,’ ” he said of the moment he realized his mistake a few days after making the donation. “Then it was, ‘How could this possibly happen?’ ”
Jim's donation was to Isata Jalloh (pictured above), a woman who was unfairly fired from her job pushing wheelchairs at Dulles International Airport because she was suspected of asking for a tip. After getting fired, she worried about how she was going to pay her rent at an apartment in Herndon, Virginia, and also send money to her children in Sierra Leone. Jim took pity on her and decided to help out.

Kofi Annan’s remains arrive Ghana for 3-day funeral service


The remains of former United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, arrived in Ghana on Monday, for the start of the three-day state funeral organized by the government of Ghana.

According to Citinewsroom, the country has organized a three-day state funeral for Annan, with the final burial slated for Thursday.

Kofi Annan, who was the 7th Secretary General of the UN, died in Switzerland on the 18th August 2018.
